Riots not diets - tackling diet culture

Let's talk body image...

Young people, especially those born female, face unrealistic beauty ideals in their peer groups and their families and social/media DAILY. This is a pandemic!

The multi million pound beauty industry profits daily from women and girls feeling bad about their bodies and cash in on our insecurities. For many these end in self-hatred, body dysmorphia and eating disorders and a life long obsession to appearance A BATTLE AGAINST THEIR OWN BODIES...the vehicles to experiencing the world.

Here’s what’s concerning:

- 'body trends' are currently going towards super thin body spapes again

- girls are facing pressures to wear make up in order to be accepted in a group

- eating disorders are on the rise

- girls mental health is in a crisis

In so many of our groups we hear about issues on schools about body shaming, fat shaming, etc. This needs to stop.

Our girls (and for the record:EVERYONE) deserves:

  • to feel valued for what they are NOT for what they look like

  • to be free of body shame, and at least have a neutral relationship with their bodies

  • to know how unrealistic and unattainable beauty ideals are

  • to feel what their body can do

RIOTS NOT DIETS (the jumper our founder Friedel is wearing) means to focus on what you believe in and work towards that instead of obsessing on dieting and hyper focus on appearance.

At Big Sis we are passionate about helping our girls and young people to accept themselves for who they are, focus on their strength, build a healthy body image- which comes with self image and belief in oneself.

Are you with us?!
